The difference between 5G and 4G
Like 4G, 5G uses radio technology. The big difference between the two is the higher frequency 5G uses, a difference that goes way beyond an extra G. While 4G antennas transmit radio waves across the entire neighbourhood, a 5G antenna sends data straight to the user’s device through targeted beams. Thanks to these technical characteristics, 5G is at least 10 times more powerful than 4G in several respects.

The 5G network can transmit data much faster by using a higher frequency. In reality, 5G is 10 to 100 times faster than 4G. With speeds of up to 20 Gbps, you can download not only films but also large volumes of business data such as BIM or GIS to your smartphone in the blink of an eye.

The 5G network has less latency than 4G. Latency is, for instance, the amount of time that elapses between the moment you click on a video and the moment it actually starts playing. Among other applications, less latency is essential for self-driving vehicles because they must be able to react instantly to information coming in over the network. At 5ms, 5G latency is approximately 40 times less than that of 4G.

While 4G supports a maximum of 100,000 connected devices per square kilometre, connection density with 5G is more than 10 times higher. A 5G network supports up to 1,000,000 devices over the same surface area, making large industrial IoT applications and extensive sensor networks possible.

5G uses 10 times less energy than 4G per transmitted byte of data. For intensive mobile data users, this higher energy efficiency results in longer battery life.
